Which is where I bang my head against a wall, because the whole point of Bobby is what he means for the boys, what he represents for them and that has an effect on their relationship's dynamics. So yeah, I'm with you there, it's a jealousy thing.
I mean, for the dynamics to remain completely unchanged they would have to be alone in the world, just the two of them so that no "noise" could come into play, but even that would affect things, one way or another. Every person they come into contact with ripples somehow on the boys and their behavior, whether negatively or positively is what makes things interesting. Hell, even a non-effect WOULD be an effect, a lack of reaction would tell us something about them.
And it's possible I'm getting into deep philosophical waters here. But in my defense, sociology is an interesting terrain. XD
