I am so embarrased it's taken me forever and a day to comment back... and I don't even have an excuse for it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, if they were not distracted by the chaos of a more elaborated plot, I could give them this moment, something that could be peaceful and normal enough for Alec to just be a fool in love and nothing more.

Why else would he have stayed around like he did?, I have some thought on the subject, but I don't know if they'll ever see the daylight.
I can just feel Alec's sadness in this as he realizes that she's comfortable with him, but doesn't love him the way he wants.
Yeah, I don't know where'd that come from, but once I wrote it and sat back to picture the image it was beautiful/sad enough for me to keep it. As I see it, Alec suffers like you put it because she sees him a a friend and that's that, but he also takes it as it comes, if this is what she can give him, he'll take it for now. For now.
