"The Face" A review. Or the pompous pretense of one.

See? I have a job, school and a cat, and this is what it takes to get me back on track on the lovable art of reading.  There really should be a counting of how many books I've read this year, there's something about the security of numbers that just makes things seem so much more solid.

But I digress.
I'll know I've achieved my ultimate goal as a writer when I can create a character like Fric Manheim.

This ten years old boy got me hooked since the first time he was introduced, even if at the moment, it seemed his only function was to further layer up the main character. Represent some sort of mirror of what could never be had because it was no longer his lot in life. Poor Fric seemed to be screaming plot device in that scene.

And maybe to some degree he was, but it still caught me unawares when the importance he'd soon gain became apparent. It wasn't until I found myself fast-forwarding through the tribulations of other characters to find out more about him that I realized that there was more to be known about him and that, finally, I had managed to identify with someone who does not get killed within the first ten pages and is not the trusty side-kick/comic relief. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Ron Weasley)

I think Yancy Hazard got to me too, a bit more than what would be strictly healthy considering, uh, certain facts, but that might be largely due to his proneness to get shot at.

But Fric. Endearing as he can be, solid voice and such a presence,  maybe it's because his tragedy is not measured in the same scale as the other leading's, but is equally (if not more) engaging and sympathy-inducing. The reasons why he's lonely are, by far, more painful than those of Ethan (The hero).

Anyhow, Dean Koontz. Hero extraordinaire, I love how he can keep me at the edge of my seat, literally holding my breath, with the eventual moist moment (that's what you get for reading by a window, on a windy day).

And there's something to be said about all the twists he can pack in one single book, and crap! I wish I could blabber more about it but, damn stupid spoilers and what they've done to my brain. If I could expand on this I'd be happily spinning theories, but I can't tell on what because then you'd get what the spoiler is about.

Has anybody read this book yet? I have theories y'all!

Now that that's done, I'm starting with "Crime and Punishment" which I am ashamed to admit I haven't read, even if it was right there on my mom's book shelf. Well, had to happen sometime, and of course it had to be now, two weeks before I kick-start finals... much headdeskery will ensue.

Oh, I'm a huge Koontz fan! HUGE, I think I've read everything so far except his newest maybe (if it's not at the library yet) and his Odd series. For some reason I couldn't get into those.

Anyways...he's an awesome writer and I especially love his thrillers with that supernatural twist!

nd his Odd series. For some reason I couldn't get into those.

I know, right? something keeps holding me off on those.

I absolutely adore the supernatural twist. It adds more than just making them be procedural stuff. It's a nice tool, me thinks.

i've read everything Koontz has written ('cept the Frankenstein books) and even own a few... i think this is one i own, read a while ago, and should probably re-read.

right after God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune, so that i can read Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune! *wee*

I have the Frankenstein ones, I love Michael Maddison like whoa, so much that I actually picture JA there. I don't do that.

Re-read. DOOOO EEEET!!!

Ohh, I asked around and no one has any intention of getting Hunters and Sandworms around these latitudes, might have to commission the brother to get 'em for me for Christmas, or something. Right? 'cause, it feels WRONG not having them.

hehehe... yeah. eventually. :D

i still need the Legends of Dune series (the one with the Bulterian Jihad in it), and then Hunters and Sandworms and i'll own them all. :D

some of them are older printings too - found God Emperor at my library's book sale some years ago....and i got the House trilogy one year for the holidays with a gift card i got from my mother-inlaw.

and my Heretics (i think) is trade paperback size, which goes and messes up the whole book-shelf thing....
