Supernatural 3.01
I just caught four hrs of sleep. Count them FOUR. And woke up because I was hungry, since I'm too riled up to go back to bed, let's do something productive, shall we?
All in all, I loved it. Want more. ::nods:: Gonna take a shower now, I still got a job to keep.
I was really unsure of what to expect from this, I knew there wasn't gonna be the emotional tension we had with S2's opener because things had been left differently, I knew there were gonna be changes and I knew might not like them. But I went in with my hopes up and after running in circles, arms a-flail, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Could it have been better? Well, yeah. But it did rock.
I loved, loved, loved the music video introduction, I'd already seen it, but it was still awesome in so, so many ways! Dude Hell Bells. I seriously LOVE this people. ::draws heart::
Oh God, Dean that music was awful, boy! how can he NOT get distracted by it? I would have been, yes, even with Dean Winchester naked in the same room. Sammy, you're an awesome little brother, don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise! And next time make SURE you hear someone telling you to come in before you actually go in, might spare you some brain bleaching.
Did Dean seem, I dunno, like manic to you? He seemed to me. Maybe it'll wear off as the season settles and it's not so new anymore, this "I have one year to live, I'mma live it to the fullest" notion...
I confess, I kinda whimpered when Bobby wasyelling at telling Tamara to put her act together and focus. It's their job and death is occupational hazard, it sucks but that's how it goes.
Also? Hello gore! Hello blood-on-someone-else-who's-not-Dean-and/or-Sam! Missed ya.
I had read somewhere else that Dean seemed OOC and Sam was being a pissy lil' bitch all over the place, but I disagree with that. This Dean feels like S1 Dean, back when Dad hadn't just sacrificed his soul for him, back when the hunting and having Sammy again was all that was needed to make him happy. I think folks were expecting some angst over his own impending death, but he was very clear about it (in AHBL 2 and here) when he said he was happy with it, he welcomed it. I think it gives him a purpose and it rights his world, he is again the one doing the sacrificing, he is the one doing the protecting, he is no longer the survivor who gets left behind. So his attitude ringed truth to my ears.
Sammy was NOT A PISSY LIL' BITCH. Sammy was in a head-space where getting Dean out the jam was paramount, if across the way they stumbled (or Bobby pushed them) into a hunt, well, so be it, it's war and he's gonna fight, but notice how it wasn't him doing the search for a new case, trying to figure out what became of the demons that got free. He was researching for a "cure" to Dean's little problem. That was totally Sam. And if he wasn't Mr Happy-happy Joy-joy, well, how'd you feel if your big brother gave away his freakin' soul to bring you back from the dead? Huh?
Imo, it was also the right thing to do for Dean to tell Sam, this early on, about the particulars of his deal, if Sam keeps going at it, unaware of this, he might drop dead. Again. And then? So it was a good idea to tell him now instead of making this one The Second Big Damn Secret, now that Sam knows about this clause, his approach to the problem will change and it will be more about looking for the loophole, me thinks.
Really, really liked Envy's little speech there, how they were demons but they were there because of the human nature, it's not all on their shoulders, they possessed these particular persons because of a pre-existent condition within them that would accommodate their presence and motivations better. In terms of "Drive of the Bad Guy" this was one of their best. I actually empathized with him and he was the effing bad guy, a goddamn demon. It was that greatly written/performed.
The roommate asked me how did Dean manage to escape Lust's enthrallment. Well I think is a.) he knew what was going on, what she was doing to him and that not all that he was feeling was coming from him, and b.) he's Dean fucking Winchester. So.
Once again, Pride going after Sam (The Boy King) was another indication that these bad guys took hold of those that would better fit their own profiles, I especially loved how he appointed himself as "the root of all evil" not only is this an affirmation you would expect from Pride, but it's also fitting considering that everyone prides on something/someone more or less, so it's a part of us none can escape, it also reminds me of this episode of "Charmed" where the sisters got possessed by three capital sins, and only got released after doing a self-less act, Prue actually jumped to hell for her sister and yet was not freed because every single one of her self-less actions was done out of pride and thus only perpetuated the cycle. So it seems reasonable that Pride would bask in how deeply rooted it is in the human animal.
Ruby. I can't really say anything about Ruby because she didn't say much either, so until I hear something along the lines of : "Hi, my name is Ruby, and I've beenogling tailing Sam because...." though I didn't like that she kept the same facial expression the whole time, her chin sort of pulled in against her neck and looking through her lashes like I'm so mysterious and threatening, fear me... that kind of put me out of it for a bit. And then there was the knife. I loved the idea of this weapon that can make demons regret the day they fell from Grace, but getting the job done comes to too high a price if it results, invariably, in the death of the host. But still, wicked blade. And why did that particular scene have to happen in slow motion? ::is confused::
Which leads me to the last of my rambly points. Direction. They went in a somewhat different way with this one, it was still interesting and artistic in that way Spn has, but it was innovative too and I found myself rather in love with that "Dean POV" moment when we first meet Isaac and Tamara (also? from the moment they said they'd been together for 8 years I knew one, if not both, was gonna die), the rock salt shot was also very nice. In general I loved how the camera work was executed here, like I mentioned before, it was new and different, but it held close those little details we're accustomed to get from Spn, such as scenery and lighting, resulting in a refreshing effect. Have I mentioned how much LOVE I have for these guys? 'Cuz it's a lot.
Oh, and did anyone else get this very Alec-y feeling from Dean? Maybe it was the lack of stubble which makes him look younger, maybe it was the way he said "maybe" in that scene with Envy, or the way he held himself at some points, but I kept getting these DA flashbacks. Not complaining, it was still Dean standing there, but I'd like to know if anybody else got a whiff of Alec?
Hmmm, probably more to come, as I re-watch it. Maybe something more detail-oriented. I'd love to discuss Sam, so yeah, there may very well be more to come.

I think.

Oh, and did anyone else get this very Alec-y feeling from Dean?
you do know Alec is/was mini!Dean, right?

Plus the hair cut or the lack of stubble could have factored as well... (?)

oh gods YES!!!
and the short hair and lack of stubble and the facial expressions reminded me a LOT of Jason Teague, actually....

FYI, I haven't read your post yet... I'm staying spoiler free until I watch the episode :D

Well, I'll wait till you watch it and join the squee/ranting, which ever fits you better ::beams::

And yeah, this show brings the pretty, not just with the boys, but the shots (rock salt definitely!) :D

Oh man, it's like, before Spn? shots weren't really something I paid a whole lot of attention, but now I'm comparing techniques, angles, lighting and the like from other shows, or even movies with Supernatural. Makes me happy, but also shake my head a little too.

On SPN-- wasn't the deal that the Sins had to speak for the thrall to be 'cast'? Dean just kissed the girl, which effectively shut her up. No talking, no thrall. She got caught up in Dean-lips and it was her downfall! *grins*
Dean looked very Alec-like, yes. 'Cause he was shaved and happy. Takes years off him too, doesn't it? *cuddles*
Oh, I'm friending you back, btw. ^_^ 'Laters!

You can call me Evan or Evie or both, if you like ;)
Oh, huge fan of all the mentioned, the movies (Lynch's?) I have differentiated issues with, but still, so much love. And the mini-series is one of the great loves of my life ::nods:: The books are bible. I totally understand where you're coming from, it took me a while to read them all too, on which one are you? I'd advice you read the action-packed ones first and then step into the more complex territory of the more religion and politics-oriented. And really, don't even bother with God Emperor, you'll only give yourself a headache and will wind up hating Leto, and I don't like hating him because he sacrificed so damn much... Anyway.
Really? I thought the shoulder-touching was what it was all about. And Bobby was talking about the family getting touched by Sloth, the woman by Envy and Isaac by Gluttony, so I took it to mean the contact that had to be made physically. But then of course, it could have been another kind of touching entirely.
It does, so much. To the point where even his mannerisms took me back to Alec, movements that I know Dean makes now and then, but without his leather jacket and the stubble they just screamed Alec to me. ::giggles::
Cool, you should be warned though, I abuse commas and italics, ramble a lot and squee really loud. Often times all in the same breath. That clarified, see ya!

I'm not on any of them; I can't seem to a. get my hands on 'em, and/or b. actually start reading them. It's ridiculous, I tell you. Same thing happened with "Pulp Fiction" -- it was on my TV about a million times (I was busy each and every single time, of course); most of my friends have it in some form or another, but did I get to watch it? Nooo, I had to set a specific date and time and go to a friend's house to see it. It happened, like, a year ago. *throws hands in air* Ridiculous!
So yeah, hopefully I'll manage to read it before I retire. *wry grin*
Well, yeah, it is all about shoulder-touching, but they also had to tell the person what to do. Now, I know she's Lust and, theoretically, she could just distract him with sex but... That doesn't seem very effective. I think she should've told him something like "You don't want to fight/kill/exorcise me" and then he'd be helpless.
..right? O.o That's kinda how I saw the scene. What'cha think?
Oh, goodie, another italics/punctuation abuser. *bounces* We'll get along juuuust fiiine. ;)
'Laters!

I have 'em all in a zip file, if you're interested I can upload them for you.
Maybe it was a combination of the two, I mean suppose they bump into someone on the street, or they spoke to somebody they weren't intending on bewitching... Though them being what they were, those possibilities might not have seem so counter-productive. Not so sure it would have been a direct order, Envy only suggested the shoes were pretty, Lust was more straightforward on what she was after, but then again there was no point faking with Dean because he already knew what she was after. It was HIM that took the dive, he went for the kill and kissed her first, so maybe he had planned on this all along and keeping his head on the game was fundamental to stay in the game at all (?).
I think it's more subtle, is more about playing with what's already there, instead of implanting it with a direct order of "take those shoes at whatever cost", "fuck me till you drop dead". Does that make sense?
Eeeeeeee!!

Wait, you can KICK ME WHERE IT HURTS for that one, the zip file's in Spanish, so unless you understand the language enough to understand it... you can kick me.
::headdesk::

You would do that? *wide-eyed* Oh, you're kinda magnificent, you know? *gives LOTS AND LOTS of chocolate-chip cookies* ^_^ Thanks!
*shakes head* No, what I meant was that it's a combination of touch and words. They don't order them or implant ideas, they just nudge, as you said. But they have to be touching them, and they have to formulate what they want to achieve with words. So, 'touch' and 'words', at the same time, get the desired result. In all of the cases we've seen, at least. And Lust never spoke, or at least never 'influenced', so Dean's "kiss NOW" tactics actually makes sense, if you think about it.
Is that better? I don't think I explained it right the first time... *frowns*
\o/ ^_^
