Supernatural 3.02
So, I had some feelings during this ep, but nothing too thinky I'm afraid. Still.
Now I'm off to watch Doctor Who, been told "Gridlock" is really something to look forward, so I'm looking forward to watch it. I LOVE Martha like whoa! She's awesome and cool-headed and pro-active and less likely to befriend the victim-to-be resulting in her own victimization. I liked Rose, but I love Martha. There.
I may be part of a very small fraction of fandom (how odd), but I didn't really heart Ben until the bench scene. "only bitches send a grown-up" that proves character, yes, he was letting the other kid have his way but Ben could have gone crying to mommy to get his video-game back for him. But he didn't and that says a lot about the kind of upbringing he's getting. I have worked with boys raised by a single mom, and trust me, things could have been very different for Ben. So basically, it wasn't until the kid got to be more than just MiniDean that I started liking him.
That said. It only took Supernatural three seasons to finally creep the hell out of me. Congrats show!
What freaked me the most was not the power machine moment, I only gasped real loud because that was gory (Yay), really gory, it was the way the Changelings portrayed children as being demanding, annoying little things. All the ever did was demand for food and tell their mother how much they loved them. It's interesting because for a form of life that depends on their impersonations of children, they didn't really do their homework. Though on the other hand, it might not be necessary since there really isn't much the un-educated (in these particular situations, I mean) can do. The drowning scene was intense, this was a mother's despair, she was drowning her kid because it wasn't her kid anymore, as dark and horrible a thing as it was, it took real courage to do it, someone else might have thought it was just their minds playing tricks on them and nothing more. Things being as they were, that made me cry on the inside, for her, for the actual little girl. I love that this show has the sac it takes to even try this kind of stunts.
The Sam and Ruby situation is very enticing, especially because we don't know her motivations which means that things could go very, very wrong. I have a theory about her, I'm thinking that maybe she's the YED's back-up plan, I think she either crawled out of hell when the gates were open, or she was out already covering YED's back somehow. If the demon's plans were so vast, it's hard to imagine he'd let them get spoiled just because he was gone. And with John Winchester hunting it down, then Sam refusing to play along, and Dean being the constant wild-card, I doubt YED never considered the possibility of being put down... So maybe Ruby plays that part in his plan? Maybe she's only offering bait for Sammy to trust her and then she can lead him along the road he was supposed to have gone.
But it's also possible she's some sort of demon with a conscious a la Angel, maybe she's being punished for something and it's part of it to help Sam uncover the ultimate truth of the Master Plan, or just randomly do good things in order to pay for whatever it is she's supposed to be paying for.
It is also possible that I have seen way too much genre television and these wacko theories are the direct result of what tv does to the brain...
I'm not commenting on the actress because she still rubs me the wrong way (I think I'm actually resented they changed the original dark-haired Ruby from the sides, for the typical blond) so I'm focusing on the character itself, the potential of it and stuff. I dare you to hold it against me.
Didn't I tell you Dean was just taking things to the extreme last ep? Ok, so I may not have used as many words, but the intent was there. Dean's scared of the unknown, he's making lists inside his head of what might have been, of what will never be, of what he regrets and having someone tell him he's not leaving just a car behind, but also all the things he's done, the people he's saved, the lives he's touched is a direct shout to WIAWSNB and his decision to come back to the real world because without him none of what was saved would have been. And let's remember that it was Dean the one putting that little detail there in his wish!verse, he's always known that what he does is important and that's where he gets his comfort from, his ambivalence over the subject is very clear in his final scene in this ep (TKAA), he knows it's not his life, but that doesn't stop him from wishing it was, from wanting it to be. He could have stayed with Lisa (so that later on she would have to tell him that Ben IS Dean's because her consciousness wouldn't let her be otherwise) and have a taste of it for a little while, but if he had, would he have been able to pull himself away and get back on the road again? Probably. But the point remains, just because he can't have it, doesn't mean he doesn't want it, and just because he wants it, doesn't mean he's gonna go after it. Is this duality that makes me respect Dean so much. Is this sort of courage that makes the Winchester who they are.
Back to Ben, it's easy to believe he is Dean's son because his behavior is not genetic. Kids will tend to like the music they're exposed to, maybe Lisa likes classic rock just as much Dean does and that might have been a plus in their weekend together, so Ben's preference for AC/DC is not exactly a characteristic he inherited from his father (whoever that might be), neither is his attraction to muscle cars because, once again, it could be his mother's influence. The being a ladies man was kinda of annoying for me, and that's why I had to have the bench scene to like the kid. What does indicate that Dean could be a daddy is Lisa's surprise at Dean's disappointment, the way she tossed out the description of this bareback she jumped a while ago resulting in Ben, how she pointed out Dean's disappointment; it was completely unexpected because she was letting him off the hook, she was doing what she thought the man that looked her up for sex after eight years of zero contact would have wanted her to do, he did seem pretty put off when he first asked her about it and she didn't elaborate much then, she waited until he brought it up again in which case a simple "No, he's not yours" would have done the job, maybe even more efficiently because that certainty would have been more devastating, I think. And then there was her reaction to his "I would have been proud to be his Dad", Lisa actually ran to kiss him then and there, even when Dean brought her son alive and sound back to her Dean only got a hug, heartfelt as it seemed, it was merely a hug (Andrea kissed him upon getting her son back, let's not forget), she didn't offer more, didn't open that door until Dean stated he'd have liked to be Ben's father. That was telling I think, it was almost something she wanted to hear, maybe? Or maybe I'm just pushing it too far there.
Well, I'm done. I've written a lot for an episode I wasn't even planning on writing about. Huh. It's Supernatural's super-power, I'm sure.
