yes to what you said about Bobby, and the difference between how he handled the situation and how John would have - and I think that difference is part of why they're turning to Bobby now - they're tired of Big Secrets and not being told all the details, so the fact that Bobby does treat them as equals (when they're not acting like 12 yr olds) gets their respect
